Not so special, except for the fact that I'm at Starbucks. I'm a fan of Starbucks, not a super fan like some people, but a fan. Maybe if I come into a Starbucks in the future and they offer a small-batch Bourbon flight I'll become a super fan ;-)<br />

There are two conditions <span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">however today</span>, that make that very pitch a very appealing offer:<br />
<div>

<li>I'm in Washington DC. </li>

The bar with this lovely offer today is <a href="http://www.marxcafemtp.com/" target="_blank">Marx Cafe</a> in the historic Mount Pleasant neightborhood in the NE district. In the time short that I've called MP home I've been to Marx Cafe a couple of times. Tonight is my first time making the trek in on a Tuesday but I have a feeling it won't be my last. </div>

If you've spent any time in Washington DC you know that it is not a cheap place to go out. And if you've spent much time on the BDT you know I'm a big advocate of Belgian Beers. Put the two together and you get one happy camper (add free WiFi, a spacious bar, and a friendly bar-keep and I'm a happy camper). </div>

I'll leave you with a joke that I overheard my bartender tell one of the patrons: </div>

I've intrenched myself in the beer culture of the Pacific Northwest, I've traveled to foreign lands (in some of which beer is illegal-gasp!) to try the local processed-barley offerings, and I've dabbled a bit in homebrewing. <div>
<a name='more'></a></div>
<div>
The goal of the Brew Dork Times is serve as an outlet to share the interesting discoveries that I make on my craft beer journey. While I probably score a 100% on the "interesting discovery" part of the goal, I flunk the "outlet to share" part). </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
In an effort to breathe life back into this blog, I'm setting a schedule:</div>
<div>
<ul>
<li><b>One dispatch a week, published on Sunday.</b></li>
</ul>
As I'm living in Washington, DC I'll dedicate the next 10-weeks to the best beers, breweries, and beer-bars of the greater DC area. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
That's all for now, time to head to be corner bottle shop to pick up something for tonight's post! </div>

This one is by fellow beer lover, and home-brew extraordinaire, Nathan Millan. Without further adieu, I'll hand it over:<br />
<br />
There are many beer applications out there on the smart phones and tablets for the aficionado to enjoy.<br />
<br />
1. Myself as a brewer really enjoy the Brew-Pal app which is only $1.99
form the store. This application allows you to create a beer recipe with
ease. Gives all the different types of grains, hops, adjucts, mash
timer, temp gauge, and efficiency tools to make a great beverage.
Comparable software on a personal computer can cost anywhere in the
range of $30.00, so for $1.99 you are getting a great value.<br />
<br />
2. Second on my list would have to be <br />
<a name='more'></a>the Home Brewers Forum
application. This is a great place to gather information on recipe
creation, equipment, ingredients, or to just meet fellow brewers. It's a
lot of fun to talk with those who share a passion for beer and get to
know their opinions, especially if you have an experimental brew, or
want to try something new but would like to see what others have done or
if that style has even been attempted before.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjucTN65_BJjQGFwwja1Jy4XT9QH6PbEmCaAe029A1EYl5Qk660SHesEIk00LyUMDvbMouPMN5kk-1L2BJxNNDJ4jHlSSbvHmmbav8rk3AmYosEjzOJxTRt3Kt1-Egpl2TqOxzp_xIdbXXU/s1600/apphoto1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjucTN65_BJjQGFwwja1Jy4XT9QH6PbEmCaAe029A1EYl5Qk660SHesEIk00LyUMDvbMouPMN5kk-1L2BJxNNDJ4jHlSSbvHmmbav8rk3AmYosEjzOJxTRt3Kt1-Egpl2TqOxzp_xIdbXXU/s640/apphoto1.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
3. My third choice would have the be the Beer Brands Database
application. This application has thousands of notes on any beer out
there either posted from the application creator or by aficionados like
you and me. It also has a great random beer generator if you are looking
to learn about a new beer that's on the market, or want to know what
you should drink that night. It also has a food-pairing setting which is
nice if you aren't quite sure what to have with dinner. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGMGJXymJBSX4EINsFdZLMy_3RRTIS5ZbiZN4tsaiTIq51fNqIIZsQL2ol-2dAo0dEM5S0_v2OBa_xgU7gIctLrfmcCl02FWbHLecZtCP3EHUX_Jb-QcSvLt0P6Ub65sWGlrm8SNLADuhi/s1600/apphoto3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGMGJXymJBSX4EINsFdZLMy_3RRTIS5ZbiZN4tsaiTIq51fNqIIZsQL2ol-2dAo0dEM5S0_v2OBa_xgU7gIctLrfmcCl02FWbHLecZtCP3EHUX_Jb-QcSvLt0P6Ub65sWGlrm8SNLADuhi/s640/apphoto3.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
4. BrewGene is also a great application to have. This application tells
you where nearby you can find a certain beer on tap or which store to
get a six pack. Also allows you to tag the restaurant to add to the
application database for fellow users. Allows one to take notes, post
pictures, and even directions to each place. It is also connected to
social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare so that friends can
easily find, and join you for a beer. The best feature in my mind
however is the recommendations. Based on your previous history list (or
cellar list) and ratings, it will generate a recommendation for you to
try and then pinpoint where that beer can be found nearby. Its a lot of
fun and easy to use, and on top of all that....its FREE!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOTrn9Bmsc2uQ5hwtXuB3Q0PTsqp5o_xclcpxyztfqxZShIjdLiRJPreHljAaKWnVAyYkPXIQSuNXXquaHyf0dS2eLOp6Ak49MQLh4lGxJf7zkdLMZh3QJiHQrAnvoS4AoIDdxgumpGK3x/s1600/apphoto4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOTrn9Bmsc2uQ5hwtXuB3Q0PTsqp5o_xclcpxyztfqxZShIjdLiRJPreHljAaKWnVAyYkPXIQSuNXXquaHyf0dS2eLOp6Ak49MQLh4lGxJf7zkdLMZh3QJiHQrAnvoS4AoIDdxgumpGK3x/s640/apphoto4.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
5. I would have to say any of the BAC testing applications. In our
field, we try many beers not necessarily to get intoxicated but for
personal research and development of the palate. Last thing we
researchers need is a DUI. There are a few out on the market right now
and all work fairly well. They are not of course as accurate as a full
on breathalyzer however they are way less expensive and can still give
you a rough idea of where you stand before getting behind the wheel. BE
SAFE!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyiYAnS6LguI68ix79U9RuQX0Gjlx5CUuS13BOUkb8Lzd4LD4PnN8iqfe0IwcykO_e6DEypITi7QsKnDo2_23UoH7Vj1mJtDQ3FyQn9dfQEmXBjjc_77TGjfcO7skd5yCJwT9jETL8UdZr/s1600/-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyiYAnS6LguI68ix79U9RuQX0Gjlx5CUuS13BOUkb8Lzd4LD4PnN8iqfe0IwcykO_e6DEypITi7QsKnDo2_23UoH7Vj1mJtDQ3FyQn9dfQEmXBjjc_77TGjfcO7skd5yCJwT9jETL8UdZr/s400/-1.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
I hope these applications will help further your knowledge as you dive into the interesting and exciting world of beer.<br />

<br />
It is often said that on a warm day it is good to keep well hydrated. Usually that means lots of water but if you prefer beer, than I recommend the Ameri-CAN beer festival in Scottsdale, AZ. On May 19, 2012 San Tan brewing sponsered the 2nd annual canned craft beer festival . Tickets could be bought for $25 or if you bought a coupon it was $13.<br />
<a name='more'></a>Why a can festival may you ask? Cans keep beer fresh by sealing out flavor destroyers like oxygen and light and new can liners prevent beer from coming in contact with aluminum. Cans are easier to chill, carry and recycle and more environmentally friendly to ship and store. The comeback of brewers implementing cans has also brought back the return of the Koozie. That lovely material that keeps your beer cold in the summer and your hand warm in the winter.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOM9QgcSNoRtX7ydi5sdpawGMsccX4c1XDzYTQvKncJUz3x8E0upLKFOBjSWEPwyu7avUjyBM2qexL_WK7J4zrQGI4gPEZEeiOyj8vk7DR60BiTdkou6yDEWza1fERZcAQr6dXDAK4MCSM/s1600/Screen+shot+2012-07-12+at+10.23.36+PM.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOM9QgcSNoRtX7ydi5sdpawGMsccX4c1XDzYTQvKncJUz3x8E0upLKFOBjSWEPwyu7avUjyBM2qexL_WK7J4zrQGI4gPEZEeiOyj8vk7DR60BiTdkou6yDEWza1fERZcAQr6dXDAK4MCSM/s320/Screen+shot+2012-07-12+at+10.23.36+PM.png" width="320" /></a>Once you entered you immediately heard the band playing and were engorged by the sweat dripping down your brow on this warm day. The first thing you wanted to do was take your miniature can and get it filled with the closest beer available. From the entrance there was a Seattle beer called Church Key Brewing. A nice Washington brewery that brought Northumberland Ale. From there it is whatever you decided to choose.<br />
<br />
There were breweries from Vermont, Colorado, Arizona, California, and Indiana among others. Each company only bringing the products they brew in a can. You may know a brewery for a certain type of beer but if they don’t brew it in a can, it wasn’t at the festival. It was also a great place to get contacts and also a bunch of swag. Many companies were giving away T-shirts, Koozies (cubbie holders), glasses and many other objects. It was a great opportunity to try different brands of beer you might never have heard of or seen in a can.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3Op5Pi98KHwShfNQVimC3nwzKprqZIUp4LGLvZpBzVwngINjhAMwrgei_Z9ep1_Dw5GwiHhN349vepu3DDEANHtSjL9W7gWLNKJqTEcpKwZF36v4BhYn3u2Ft56xXqX8wsAV0yaZnE64M/s1600/Screen+shot+2012-07-12+at+10.49.53+PM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="125" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3Op5Pi98KHwShfNQVimC3nwzKprqZIUp4LGLvZpBzVwngINjhAMwrgei_Z9ep1_Dw5GwiHhN349vepu3DDEANHtSjL9W7gWLNKJqTEcpKwZF36v4BhYn3u2Ft56xXqX8wsAV0yaZnE64M/s400/Screen+shot+2012-07-12+at+10.49.53+PM.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Many of the breweries represented I was very familiar with but there were a couple that I hadn’t heard of and were a pleasant surprise. First was Sun King brewing out of Indiana. They have a Scottish Ale that is quite killer. Definitely worth a try if you are in Indiana or if you come across them. It’s a year round brew that is 5.3% alcohol. The second was 21st Amendment out of California that has a Back in Black IPA. I’m on a huge dark kick right now so that set me up perfectly. I know dark beer in 100 degree temperature isn’t the best but it doesn’t matter when it’s high quality beer. This is a brewery that is purely set on brewing their beer in cans. They have 8 different styles of beer and all of them are served in the traditional beer can.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIP1mLCZMx8WF-Kq6nL9gw7rID0w2EX8ZTNELwK3I57TV-shAy6q0Za-l-6MS6k8MHYgAbl4rwLaWb4CNXS9rHAcFrgAUIrXrGoRIibUA55vfhUOLUCjr2gkj9Ep00sVm6l16Rwv-XNZnU/s1600/DSC05564.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="319" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIP1mLCZMx8WF-Kq6nL9gw7rID0w2EX8ZTNELwK3I57TV-shAy6q0Za-l-6MS6k8MHYgAbl4rwLaWb4CNXS9rHAcFrgAUIrXrGoRIibUA55vfhUOLUCjr2gkj9Ep00sVm6l16Rwv-XNZnU/s320/DSC05564.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Whether you bought a ticket for $13 or $25, this was a festival that any craft beer lover should head to. It’s basically all you can taste within a 4 hour period. Whether this festival heads back to Chandler or stays in Scottsdale, you should put in on your calendar for 2013 as you surely will not be disappointed.<br />

The attendees varied widely in age an social group but were friendly across the board. I wore one of the shirts that I picked up on <a href="http://brewdorktimes.blogspot.com/2012/06/allagash-brewery.html" target="_blank">my visit to the Allegash Brewery</a> last month and was quite pleased to receive a number of comments from people that knew of their beer (the typical conversation involved a happy recognition that we both knew and loved Allegash followed by a brief commiseration about the fact that we can no longer get their beers in WA.)<br />

Another huge plus was that the festival was extremely dog-friendly. Until I can curb my wanderlust to the point that I can responsibly get a dog of my own I'm forced to live vicariously through other dog owners. This couple's "pair" of k9 was one of the most unique adoption choices I've ever come across! <br />

The one down side was that the people pouring the beers were volunteers and decidedly not "beer people". I don't <i>need to know </i>how many IBUs a beer has or what it's original gravity was in order to enjoy it, but if I try a great beer that I've never heard of before, it would be nice to at least know where it's from. <br />

A while back I got the idea in my head of doing a long distance brewery tour through the American West. The idea came on by chance (most likely after my third or fourth craft beer one night)<b> and</b> <b>I quickly became obsessed...</b><br />
<a name='more'></a>At the time I had only been writing the BDT for a few months. The concept of combing multiple passions of mine (craft beer, writing, photography) was still very novel. Add visiting breweries, traveling to new cities, and taking a long road trip to that that recipe and it became difficult for me to sleep at night. I needed a plan of attack...<br />
<ul>
<li>First, I went online and printed a dozen blank maps of the Western United States. </li>
<li>Next I started marking the maps with the breweries that I knew that I couldn't miss. </li>
<li>Then I spent hours googling things like "brewery + denver" or "craft beer bars near Spokane Washington" (before long I had a map was covered in notes) </li>
<li>Finally, I took on the challenging (but fun) task of connecting the dots in a route that would maximize visits, and minimize backtracking.</li>
</ul>
<ol>
</ol>
At the time I was living in Tempe, Arizona so the logical path started and ended there. Some of the cities were close together, others were hundreds of miles away. Some of the cities I wanted to visit had no real interest from a beer stand-point but I included because if I were going to be driving around the US I might as well take advantage of the opportunity to see ALL of the places of interest (and you never know, I might just stumble upon an amazing craft beer bar too new to have a website!) I worked and reworked the map until I had a route that I was happy with. When I finished I held it up and smiled (I may have even posted my proud work on the fridge for my housemates to admire).<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTRWVkktWIWRNNRXQXWSo8i2smceTUd-m9bsu6C-ibG4tMjAozp6LvPrtbU78Fbwu9KfhW57LbEzMVHuK-qQrzwYLo1RpjT_8nnb6PswEG0ASB48obuAQ3zP-vJA4RwvghxBWafG0kJo7i/s1600/america+the+brewtiful2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTRWVkktWIWRNNRXQXWSo8i2smceTUd-m9bsu6C-ibG4tMjAozp6LvPrtbU78Fbwu9KfhW57LbEzMVHuK-qQrzwYLo1RpjT_8nnb6PswEG0ASB48obuAQ3zP-vJA4RwvghxBWafG0kJo7i/s640/america+the+brewtiful2.jpg" width="488" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Still needs a little work I think, but it's a pretty darn good start!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
While hypothetically charting the course was exciting, the fun quickly dissipated when I moved on to actual logistics stage. A trip of this size and scope would be expensive... really expensive. And it would take time... a lot of time! (and would my car even be up for this sort of trip?!)<br />
<br />
A loop like the one above would conservatively take two months. That's two months off work, two months of food costs, accommodation, and gas costs (not to mention beer!) The practicality of actually taking the trip quickly shifted from "probably feasible" to "would be tough to pull off" eventually coming to rest at: "there's no way I can afford this right now."<br />
<br />
When I reached the sad conclusion that I wouldn't be able to take this trip (at least in the near future) I stuffed all of the papers that I had accumulated into a manila folder, wrote "tabled until further notice" on it, filed it away, and tried to forget about it. <br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>-Fast-forward 28 Months-</b></div>
<br />
I've dusted of the manila folder and reaffirmed my resolve to make this trip happen! While I'm not planning on leaving tomorrow, I'm writing about the trip here for two reasons: <br />
<ol>
<li>Although I'm in a different place than I was two years ago (emotionally, financially, physically) <b>I'm still right on course</b> with my Western America brew tour. </li>
<li>As the quote at the top says, when you really want something all of the universe will conspire to help you achieve it. The universe doesn't "drop your dreams in your lap" but if you are loud, and clear, and persistent in your pursuit of your dreams, I believe that you can make your goals a reality, no matter how ambitious they are! So, universe, here is my proclamation. <b>I'm going on this trip!</b></li>
</ol>
<br />
Prost!<br />

When I cracked open Iron Horses' Irish Death I was reminded the aroma of nutella spread over burnt toast. The beer was rich and complex notes of hazelnut, chocolate, burnt wheat toast, and freshly ground espresso... I loved it!<br />

Sometimes my memory serves me well, sometimes it does not. Today's post unfortunately, is a story of the latter.<br />
<a name='more'></a>In my defense, the last time I tried this beer I was in college. My palate was young and I was only starting to learn that not all beer was fizzy and yellow.<br />
<br />
When I tried Abita Purple Haze in college I was very impressed. I remember thinking it was “wow, this is a great-lightly sweet easy-drinking wheat beer.”<br />
<br />
When I tried this beer recently I thought "this is an overly sweet beer that almost makes me cringe." It was not lightly sweet, it was not delicately nuanced, and it did not have "hints" of anything. It was a over-ripe, over sweet, out of balance wheat beer. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjypMNVT3wXTZxSbVtFm9P2m2-DOn36NuyolpB-uYmZzTQjOvdj95DyjxRhJsxcoVt7YtiSuops97WGCjbjGtsx8bf2FZ7crHRgxxXHBazN4MVB6G6Gemo3J4MsWC0Y8C-Yr-SJKwxNGFZi/s1600/DSC_0105.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjypMNVT3wXTZxSbVtFm9P2m2-DOn36NuyolpB-uYmZzTQjOvdj95DyjxRhJsxcoVt7YtiSuops97WGCjbjGtsx8bf2FZ7crHRgxxXHBazN4MVB6G6Gemo3J4MsWC0Y8C-Yr-SJKwxNGFZi/s640/DSC_0105.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />
Before you jump to any conclusions or assume I didn't like this beer simply because it isn't anything like so of the beers that I give high ratings to please understand that I like all different types of beer (variety is the spice of life!) Although fruit beers (or wheat beers for that matter) are not at the top of my list of favorites styles, I can certainly appreciate when a beer is well-produced, true-to-style, complex, and balanced (like <a href="http://brewdorktimes.blogspot.com/2012/05/what-is-beer-supposed-to-taste-like.html" target="_blank">THIS</a> fruit beer.) Abita dropped the ball with this beer unfortunately, and that has nothing to do with it's style. <br />
<br />
I'll leave you, with a musical number... Sing-along but be sure to substitute "Purée" for "beret"<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<a name='more'></a>It
was a humble beginning for Allagash Brewery in 1995. Founder Rob Tod
didn't have loads of money, a large staff, a 'dream' location or the
luxury of a tried-and-tested blueprint to success.<br />
<br />
What he did have were a few basic (and indispensable) building blocks:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjy0jwfv7xCJHfmgQSroh_ZEayo9VOOEAo4AVvoW6iLk4nWc6qPQy2omWhlXmQ0eootCfo12yx-dbNsJTF19I1GgA2g7uN7ofzahD3IzcPe-2F88zKn0qHZY9w0bV8nvdGI4PctGcH-eWWW/s1600/DSC_0285.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjy0jwfv7xCJHfmgQSroh_ZEayo9VOOEAo4AVvoW6iLk4nWc6qPQy2omWhlXmQ0eootCfo12yx-dbNsJTF19I1GgA2g7uN7ofzahD3IzcPe-2F88zKn0qHZY9w0bV8nvdGI4PctGcH-eWWW/s400/DSC_0285.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<ol>
<li>Passion about his product (Belgian-style ales), </li>
<li>An open market (not a lot of people making Belgian-style ales) and </li>
<li>A willingness to work hard (essential when starting any business!)</li>
</ol>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Those three things, coupled with the fact that people all across American (yes, even Mainers) had grown tired of the same-ol-same-old beer scene and were beginning to actively seek out new and different beers set the stage for what is today one of the best breweries in the country!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_mxl0FeqcYbV0CuMvmrwScMODcU_E59EQZq0D0cQ1nAb1bOKTX4CJ5nJRAVmnA2LG-boAiZK7M2zTAN574sj8KYq4OE90mlAPqx9xwAdF2fqzWLWVbleVjAdr8LLJpNsuNUOL4jLZAHKl/s1600/DSC_0294.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_mxl0FeqcYbV0CuMvmrwScMODcU_E59EQZq0D0cQ1nAb1bOKTX4CJ5nJRAVmnA2LG-boAiZK7M2zTAN574sj8KYq4OE90mlAPqx9xwAdF2fqzWLWVbleVjAdr8LLJpNsuNUOL4jLZAHKl/s640/DSC_0294.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Unlike every other brewery tour I've been on Allagash starts their tour in the tasting room (just one more example of doing things different than the status quo?). I was really hoping our 11:00am tour would stretch to noon before we hit the taps but what the heck, I suppose if AM-drinking was the "cards I was delt" I'd have to play them. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
First they poured us the White, then the Dubbel, then the Tripple, then the Prince Tuesday IPA, then the Curioux, then--I lost count!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The "tastes" were more then generous, and as my mother (more of a wine-dork, than a brew-dork) kept handing me her glass after a sip ("don't let this go to waste") I had more than a bit of a buzz going before we started the tour. </div>

Dorothy really hit the nail on the head when she said:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoHM4uYBOE5inm00VQoAMhckKwEo8IWmPbjIDCyMo8o-an5xZpfje2xZrOnNrnPXmEplJXrF7Pn2YyrRqxYoWWgVpaV9GthzfymEEyhoUTnufg8XjJv54te_vvHs4-8Q27oywjJ8EzozL9/s1600/Screen+shot+2012-06-21+at+9.56.21+PM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="307" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoHM4uYBOE5inm00VQoAMhckKwEo8IWmPbjIDCyMo8o-an5xZpfje2xZrOnNrnPXmEplJXrF7Pn2YyrRqxYoWWgVpaV9GthzfymEEyhoUTnufg8XjJv54te_vvHs4-8Q27oywjJ8EzozL9/s400/Screen+shot+2012-06-21+at+9.56.21+PM.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<a name='more'></a>Maine may claim to be "Vacationland" and "the way life should be" but for me it is (and always will be) home-sweet-home.<br />
<br />
I was born and raised near Bangor, and although I haven't lived there in over 10-years (a third of my life!) I still feel undeniably at home in the union's north-eastern most (and only single-syllable) state.<br />
<br />
As my vacation neared I made big mental plans of touring Maine's breweries... taking the craft beer scene by storm. When I actually arrived it became immediately evident that it was far more excited about spending time with her:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGgSOkOrQhGVK2K46xqHTzJogcD4OXUmSQvln3xg_Fa9iPV74g6vg-lmnRNSf5ZoAvImmz9Jrp6vwIhG5Hwd6BCofEPzCx0UsbfPzCglEn4VJjFWlxDf2ZDJBA0pzs_bMK_R5Mklj2W1FP/s1600/DSC_0098.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGgSOkOrQhGVK2K46xqHTzJogcD4OXUmSQvln3xg_Fa9iPV74g6vg-lmnRNSf5ZoAvImmz9Jrp6vwIhG5Hwd6BCofEPzCx0UsbfPzCglEn4VJjFWlxDf2ZDJBA0pzs_bMK_R5Mklj2W1FP/s400/DSC_0098.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
and her:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBckqHuMwH9Jr-ZfAP_r7FQY-mlJjEMBo_jMdLEXAq7chVpulVpEvC5gzId6Xur0OZT884vFb8bAXgIT81n_SEayeo0TuyHmRAWpFl5tPceW8fGrWjcJhIjY72ccV6xyD1-IoWlW9aw3SP/s1600/DSC_0108.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBckqHuMwH9Jr-ZfAP_r7FQY-mlJjEMBo_jMdLEXAq7chVpulVpEvC5gzId6Xur0OZT884vFb8bAXgIT81n_SEayeo0TuyHmRAWpFl5tPceW8fGrWjcJhIjY72ccV6xyD1-IoWlW9aw3SP/s400/DSC_0108.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
and these two:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFr3RWVpLoRHQlJvWUYFQgUfrnA6fFlOrPSxUNQ19wqn-5-qIoAgnh6mDFsTsszV5psmArXKjDxr4DcnIuaHbLqpYTPpxwBbcX6CmzUJtxNRtt8-HX-wYURraWU2vYL_KMsMasQ8tzTFix/s1600/DSC_0150_2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFr3RWVpLoRHQlJvWUYFQgUfrnA6fFlOrPSxUNQ19wqn-5-qIoAgnh6mDFsTsszV5psmArXKjDxr4DcnIuaHbLqpYTPpxwBbcX6CmzUJtxNRtt8-HX-wYURraWU2vYL_KMsMasQ8tzTFix/s400/DSC_0150_2.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Oh yeah, and these two as well....<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Now I didn't completely neglect my responsibilities as a "brew dork." I enjoyed a delicious vanilla-infused stout by Portland brewing company.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2wDpw2-fGkHQZc0XaFHAfYL9a5-xGAay8fZbkoQzf-07HQ9fpwlIMAIF_bpCxZ9Bii6B3ubSz9ZStqcmojuWnlHUWqRtUVdIdC97lZ6p3MZJMKsh3UkRZjWsAbGx800O7-WGa1QLONd2P/s1600/DSC_0331.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2wDpw2-fGkHQZc0XaFHAfYL9a5-xGAay8fZbkoQzf-07HQ9fpwlIMAIF_bpCxZ9Bii6B3ubSz9ZStqcmojuWnlHUWqRtUVdIdC97lZ6p3MZJMKsh3UkRZjWsAbGx800O7-WGa1QLONd2P/s640/DSC_0331.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />
It was delicious and certainly not the only brew I enjoyed chez-moi.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFo9Wad2zH0sgZ2kBxOA50R7uZqzTpbGUaubnKZZ0brw6jLOgSqqHhjsfRnDUfmpGjtsWE51aNDEAO2aWDWQqfOFrUW2vIupHeR3E0c2aBGfUDVU8ckZoN4L6ps3CTntaJK6syYQGqjY2w/s1600/DSC_0333.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFo9Wad2zH0sgZ2kBxOA50R7uZqzTpbGUaubnKZZ0brw6jLOgSqqHhjsfRnDUfmpGjtsWE51aNDEAO2aWDWQqfOFrUW2vIupHeR3E0c2aBGfUDVU8ckZoN4L6ps3CTntaJK6syYQGqjY2w/s400/DSC_0333.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Along with some others (not photographed) I also very much enjoyed a delicious bitter.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

On a trip to the coast I stumbled upon a car that is most certainly captained by the Brew Dork Times Doppelganger of the Northeast...<br />
<br />

<br />
If there was any confusion about which "brew" the license plate referred to (beer? coffee? something else??) the contents of the back seat more than put the debate to rest!<br />
<br />

<br />
The crowning (beer) achievement of my trip home however was my visit to the Allegash Brewery! Allegash is known nation-wide for it's high-caliber Belgian-style beers. Although it's a long drive from Bangor to Portland I knew that my trip home would not be complete without making the trek south to pay homage to a brewery that pursues perfection unceasingly and delivers some of the best beer available not just in Maine, but anywhere in our beautiful nation!<br />

I was so happy with my visit to Allegash Brewery I decided that it gets it's own post. Check it out <a href="http://brewdorktimes.blogspot.com/2012/06/allagash-brewery.html" target="_blank">here</a>.<br />

I had a wonderful time at home Mom and Dad (also, it was great to see you too Erik, Jim, and Garrett). Looking forward to seeing you again soon.<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5NJNIPFodiWmX_3LFg49unn2DiAuYo0324FOlCuBiaIf77GRVqm0e6YZFWzTqoUNrp-MAL43s1gMyWcEI3iJFdit10F3d2FVahyS2V3sGJd4r1L9YNhBnZ91qHEvZA3YekGjViq1Wd2wn/s1600/DSC_0116.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5NJNIPFodiWmX_3LFg49unn2DiAuYo0324FOlCuBiaIf77GRVqm0e6YZFWzTqoUNrp-MAL43s1gMyWcEI3iJFdit10F3d2FVahyS2V3sGJd4r1L9YNhBnZ91qHEvZA3YekGjViq1Wd2wn/s400/DSC_0116.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Comes a beer that really disappointed me...<br />
<a name='more'></a>All signs pointed to this beer being a winner. Sleek label, sexy 16-oz aluminum can packaging. It's brewed by Oskar Blues which makes (I had thought anyway) exclusively good beers (including <a href="http://brewdorktimes.blogspot.com/2010/03/kicking-can.html" target="_blank">one of my favorite dark beers...</a>)<br />
<br />
That said, all the hype marketing in the world becomes irrelevant when you pull back the tab and put the beer to the taste-bud-test!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipcKrt_5B01WD8ZlfGOftOlx-fGerTQNwuNyEbn1zH_nDLNomA1gViOkfWkremaOLRvkrp1TaAzXl3u3tPXjvR5dPcLqfElDDbBsQgB8RbWZg6Bicz-c67yxH-NAh2oaYfaQZhdqVhTcgU/s1600/DSC_0113_2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipcKrt_5B01WD8ZlfGOftOlx-fGerTQNwuNyEbn1zH_nDLNomA1gViOkfWkremaOLRvkrp1TaAzXl3u3tPXjvR5dPcLqfElDDbBsQgB8RbWZg6Bicz-c67yxH-NAh2oaYfaQZhdqVhTcgU/s640/DSC_0113_2.JPG" width="426" /></a></div>
It tasted like an overly sweet, hoppy red ale. Actually, it kind of reminded me of <a href="http://brewdorktimes.blogspot.com/b/post-preview?token=SBf4vDcBAAA.5aAt0P_JlUr9bAI6Ypfeaw.Bpz6kZM0AknH_sdYuNa7bg&postId=7648597211186637632&type=POST" target="_blank">this</a>. <a href="http://www.oskarblues.com/the-brews/deviant-dales" target="_blank">Deviant Dale's</a> is certainly better than that beer, but the fact that it reminds me that beer at all is a bad sign. <br />
<br />
I give it a 1/3rd full pint glass. Worth a shot if you see it, but keep you expectations in check!<br />
<br />
Prost!<br />

Most are pretty good. Some are just alright. A few are downright bad, and an even smaller number of them are...<br />
<a name='more'></a><span style="font-size: x-large;"><i>REALLY DAMN GOOD!</i></span><br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.newoldlompoc.com/" target="_blank">Old Lompoc's</a> C-Note is just that; a really damn good beer! It's an Imperial Pale Ale from Portland, Oregon sporting 100 <a href="http://beer.wikia.com/wiki/International_Bitterness_Units" target="_blank">IBUs</a> (get it? C-note! (the letter "C" also pays tribute to the first letter of the 7-hops that went into the bad-boy))<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Seven must be the lucky number (and C must be the lucky letter?)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
The two most important characteristics I look for when I evaluate the quality of any beer are balance and complexity.* While claiming 100 IBUs is impressive and intriguing, if the malt, sweetness, body, and character isn't balanced, it's just a big old hoppy mess. Fortunately, this beer has such great balance it could walk a tight-rope between the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petronas_Towers" target="_blank">Petronas Towers</a> on a windy day!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
If this label looks familiar you might remember my recent post of <a href="http://brewdorktimes.blogspot.com/2012/05/workers.html" target="_blank">Proletariat</a>. When I had that beer I knew the brewer was onto something, and now I have no doubt that I will thoroughly enjoy the last few Lompic beers sitting in my fridge waiting to be tried!<br />

Today, as luck would have it I stumbled upon a diamond in the rough (well, technically two diamonds in the rough). <br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
Every once and a while I'll stop in the local Goodwill to poke around. When I do, I always make sure to check the glassware section to see if anyone dropped off any unique beer glasses. <br />
<br />
Well, today must have been my lucky day because I found not one but two authentic German Oktoberfest Beer Steins!!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjI3pjK2YcNn6NBDQnjarumYuWujU4LEqM9xNCZZEsLWnFrK9LZP7JA6bt3R81WMOZ2n4-bPRdrMyULZbpJp8ncE2syDJ8zRsvlAJ8Qln8nKbBL0s2HIFeEUwCydTT9lnV60jAqVCDUXaxV/s1600/DSC_0095.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjI3pjK2YcNn6NBDQnjarumYuWujU4LEqM9xNCZZEsLWnFrK9LZP7JA6bt3R81WMOZ2n4-bPRdrMyULZbpJp8ncE2syDJ8zRsvlAJ8Qln8nKbBL0s2HIFeEUwCydTT9lnV60jAqVCDUXaxV/s400/DSC_0095.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The price? 4.99 a piece! (they would have been a steal at four times that amount). When I saw them I instantly felt a warm feeling swelling up in me. I was transported back to my European vacation in the fall of 2009. I remembered all of the amazing beers I tried, and of course, of my first (but not last) time experiencing the wonder and joy that is Oktoberfest!<br />

Today I met Dave, the head brewer at Lompoc Brewing company (since 2010.) Dave was in Seattle promoting Lompoc's brews and stopped by <a href="http://wineworldspirits.com/" target="_blank">Wine World + Spirits</a> to drop off some samples.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
The beer I had the opportunity to try was Proletariat, Northwest Red Ale! I'd never tried any of Lompoc's beers but Dave seemed like a most capable brewer, and was clearly passionate about his beers.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOTnts5fz-W1EZkaSb4DsakkVuB8JrtyAFJCfGz1u4uQe94U98oYMagsastwN5hnvFj3FqJAD7GnZkYdCLFcqJxgppjOeBkeLT1r2ZgEHtFqbvqmN9j_F5kfDhPxBJKNIvX6qvIfE7fqRQ/s1600/DSC_0103.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOTnts5fz-W1EZkaSb4DsakkVuB8JrtyAFJCfGz1u4uQe94U98oYMagsastwN5hnvFj3FqJAD7GnZkYdCLFcqJxgppjOeBkeLT1r2ZgEHtFqbvqmN9j_F5kfDhPxBJKNIvX6qvIfE7fqRQ/s640/DSC_0103.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />
When I first tasted Proletariat the malty-ness struck me immediately. It was much richer and creamier than I had expected. The color was darker and richer than most reds I've had, and the lacing on the head was thick and clung to the rim of the glass. <br />
<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUtOHDCSjmursjBviEcYfxWMTsqnfDizGFkZc4UJjz9VxwfrsAVKOLYlhFyNk7xghE8CrHjT_L-0jNmsP-pw1bzC7o0jO30Lc6ZJ7FHeFkluW5I_J81R2qMtgammDMAz9et4iRRDI29-91/s1600/DSC_0107.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUtOHDCSjmursjBviEcYfxWMTsqnfDizGFkZc4UJjz9VxwfrsAVKOLYlhFyNk7xghE8CrHjT_L-0jNmsP-pw1bzC7o0jO30Lc6ZJ7FHeFkluW5I_J81R2qMtgammDMAz9et4iRRDI29-91/s640/DSC_0107.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />
All around I was very pleased with this beer. It's was darker and maltier than I have come to expect with red ales (and, than I prefer in a red ale) but it was good none the less. It was complex and balanced and if a beer checks both of those boxes, it's ahead of most beers.<br />
<br />
Well done Dave, I give it a 2/3rds full pint glass!<br />
<br />
Prost!<br />

At the University District street fair this past weekend I picked up a couple of really cool alcohol-themed...<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
Prints from <a href="http://bartondegraaf.com/" target="_blank">Degraff Fine Arts</a>. <br />
<br />
Bart Degraff does great work and I had a good laugh when he explained the premise of his piece, the evolution of beer.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I asked Bart about the pint of Pabst Blue Ribbon on the left he laughed and told me about growing up in Colorado during the pre-craft-beer boom. In his alcohol consuming adolescence Bart drank PBR for a lack of other options. With all of the great beer that is available today, he said it's a bit of a slap in the face to see young beer drinkers obsessed with the lowest common denominator. I couldn't agree more.<br />
<br />
Prost!<br />

From the makers of Arrogant Bastard comes a beer designed to celebrate (inside and out) the 13th anniversary of...<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a>Bottleworks! That's right, <a href="http://bottleworksbeerstore.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Bottleworks</a> of Wallingford is celebrating 13-years in business this month and (as they do each year) they've teamed up with a brewery to create a special beer commemorate the milestone.<br />
<br />
Here's a look at the making behind this years brew:<br />
<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/w4WxmBBx1kk" width="520"></iframe>
<br />
<br />
Did they say they used 13-grains and 13 hops?!?<br />

Oh yes they did. Now, before I get into my review of this beer I want to first say a little bit about Stone's style for those who aren't already familiar with the brewery (there are probably a few people who don't know about them right?)<br />
<br />
Stone’s beers are kind of like the Circus freaks of the craft beer world. Before you get all worked up and mount your defense of Stone, understand that this is not an insult (there are plenty of very decent individuals that call themselves circus freaks.) What I I mean is that if you were dating one of Stone’s beers, you’d be a more than a little bit hesitant about introducing it to your parents. Actually, in using this analogy, I’m sure this guy would prefer to think of his beers as the “bad asses of the craft beer world” but I’m sticking with circus freaks. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh59OKXtkNDZyL8wmsbxJu9AUsvkf3eTNF3nX2Q1ytE2HEyKpmFYG9gBm_y29RHcq1cp_t4P1fLyaQtsZhZXBOCU1QxsSpGWi-adinDr2KTrChmcpMuF4LDwihBjjSkhU1CRAe4gqyyyLTj/s1600/DSC_0106.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh59OKXtkNDZyL8wmsbxJu9AUsvkf3eTNF3nX2Q1ytE2HEyKpmFYG9gBm_y29RHcq1cp_t4P1fLyaQtsZhZXBOCU1QxsSpGWi-adinDr2KTrChmcpMuF4LDwihBjjSkhU1CRAe4gqyyyLTj/s400/DSC_0106.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Unfortunately, after tasting this beer, it’s clear this isn’t one of the “cool” circus freaks, like the siamese catortionist, or the guy that swallows swords... this beer is the bearded lady, frightening, abrasive, and all around unpleasant. Stone will swing at any pitch, so they’re bound to miss from time to time. Unfortunately this one was a big-time wiff.*<br />
<br />
I give it a 1/3rds full pints glass, and I'm being generous... **<br />
<br />
Prost!<br />
-D.Lux<br />
<br />
*I haven’t laid a bottle down. It’s possible that with some aging, this beer well melow out and become quite enjoyable, but with all the great beers out there, I don’t think I’m going to spend the time or effort. <br />
<br />
**I really love Stone's beers and I can't overstate their contribution to the Craft beer revolution. A couple of years ago I had the pleasure of touring their brewery in Encinitas, California with Mark "the Brewstraveller" Sullivan. You can read about our trip to Stone (and at least a half dozen more Southern Californian breweries, on Marks website <a href="http://thebrewstraveller.com/" target="_blank">here</a>.<br />

You see, I’m a big fan of the way the Belgians look at beer. With over 200 common styles of beer in Belgium, their take on the beverage is that there's a style for everyone. If you don’t like one beer, try another! It's with that free-spirited "different is good" attitude that I approached today's beer...<br />

It's hard to believe that prior to October 1978...<br />
<a name='more'></a>the phrase "Brew Free or Die!" could very likely have appeared on a picket sign anywhere across the country. That's because prior to Jimmy Carter signing bill H.R. 1337 into law that October, home brewing was illegal. A few decades down the road and look how far we've come!<br />
<br />
With a cold six-pack in my fridge I realized I didn't really know all that much about 21st amendment brewery so I spent some time browsing <a href="http://21st-amendment.com/" target="_blank">their website</a>. What I found was not just a great resource for the story behind 21st Amendment, but also a great resource for the history of craft brewing in America:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
What is the 21st Amendment?</blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
Around the turn of the 20th century, in the year 1900, there were thousands of small breweries operating across America. When Freccia and O’Sullivan were researching old San Francisco breweries (trying to find a cool name for their new brewery), what really made an impact was the discovery that there were about 40 breweries operating just within the city limits of San Francisco (by comparison, today there are eight with a population more than double what it was in 1900). They realized that the brewery captured the essence of the neighborhoods of San Francisco. They were the local gathering places. Places to exchange ideas, debate politics and philosophy. Places for families to come together on weekends. Places that provided something unique—hand crafted beer that was different at every brewery and that defined the taste of a neighborhood. </blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
In 1920, Prohibition wiped out this culture and put the “local” out of business. For 13 years, social interaction was largely driven underground, to the speakeasies, where regular citizens became a nation of outlaws. </blockquote>

<blockquote class="tr_bq">
But with the passage of the 21st Amendment, repealing Prohibition, we, as a society, were able to begin the slow climb back to reclaiming the essence of the neighborhood gathering place. At the 21st Amendment, they celebrate the culture of the great breweries of old, making unique, hand crafted beers, great food, and providing a comfortable, welcoming atmosphere that invites conversation, interaction and a sense of community.</blockquote>
Ahhhh good beer bring people together... Doesn't it make you fell all warm and sentimental inside!<br />

Alas, this is a beer review, so what did I think of their immaculately-well packaged product? As it was a six-pack, I had six chances to taste this beer and pull from it the flavors and components. It's with more than a little disappointment that I say that after 6 tries, I still can't think of anything memorable about this IPA. It was a bit steely (with higher than normal acidity) but other than that, it was a very average craft IPA. Average for craft beer is still pretty good (hey, the average NPA player is still amongst the best basketball players in the world, right?) but it was still a bit disappointing.<br />
<br />
I give it a 1/3rd Pint Glass.<br />
<br />
Prost,<br />
