BREW REVIEW - Left Hand Brewing Company Milk Stout
As the temps outside continue to fall--a bit of a stretch to say this about central Arizona, but nonetheless it is getting ‘less hot’ these days--I get less excited about the prospects of an ice cold Pilsners and more in the mood for heartier beers. So, last night at the suggestion of a coworker, I tried Left Hand Brewing Company’s Milk Stout.
Like all stouts the LH Brewing company’s Milk Stout is incredibly dark--it looks like they roasted their malts for a month! The beer has great clarity, a beautiful rich tan head, and it absolutely bursts with aroma. As soon as I started pouring the beer rich fragrances of toffee, roasted nuts, and fresh ground coffee beans filled my nose. When I sipped the beer those flavors were joined by flavors of sweet cream, cocoa, toasted almonds, and a hearty, earthy flavor that I never quite pegged down but was similar to toasted oats. The mouth-feel was thick but not too heavy (a touch more thin than whole milk) and the beer was never too bitter as a result of Left Hand's addition of milk sugar during the brewing process. What didn't I like about drinking this beer? Well, the finish was a little lackluster, and I didn't have a double chocolate volcano brownie to eat with it, but that's just about it.
By the numbers I give this beer a solid 7/10 [Flavor 8/10, Balance 7/10 Complexity 6/10]. Thanks for the great beer recommendation Daisy!
If you know a beer that you think I should try, leave it as a comment to this post--if I can get my hands on it--I’ll drink it!
